RE: INFORMATION ON SUSTAINABLE ACTIONS TO IMPROVE THE LIFE
CONDITIONS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES (PWDS)
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Brief background
This memorandum is being submitted to the Parliament of Zambia with the invitation
of the Clerk to the National Assembly.
Disability Rights Watch (DRW) is a duly registered organisation for persons with
disabilities founded in 2011. Its foundation is based on the actualisation of the
principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
DRW is registered under the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) as
a Disability Service Organisation.
The vision of Disability Rights Watch is “A society where the rights of persons with
disabilities are recognized and respected so that they live free from discrimination and
injustice.”
The mission statement of Disability Rights Watch is “to defend, protect and promote
the economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights and fundamental freedoms of
persons with disabilities and ensure the respect of their inherent dignity on an equal
basis with all others in Zambia and in the Southern Africa region”.
It is in view of this that the organisaation is engaged in strategic advocacy work, which
includes strategic litigation, monitoring of the UNCRPD implementation in Zambia and
developing the capacities of organisations of/for persons with disabilities.
